Resume Advice Whats in a Summary - Hallie Crawford
Resume Advice Whatâs in a Summary Heres some resume advice to make your resume standout from the rest! Have you ever read the summary on the back of a book to determine itâs worth? Of course! Many have! It is there to spark and capture your attention with a gripping snapshot of the contents inside. Likewise, you want to make an impression on your potential employer. One that entices them to read on, gives them a quick snapshot of the contents, sets the theme, and hopefully convinces them that their search is potentially nearing its end. What do you write in your resume summary? Here are some pointers: Indicate the approximate number of years you bring (however be careful itâs not too much so you are not dated) If applicable mention the type of industry you specialize in, especially if this is the industry you want to stay with Your current position helps give the reader some background on the type and level of position you are seeking Definitely mention the skills and expertise you offer make sure they all respond to the needs of the role to better target your resume to the position Including some measurables can never hurt Sentences should start with active verbs to provide more impact Your summary should be written in the first case implied, so no âIâs should be included Try not to be too lengthy, remember you have less than 5 seconds to make an impact, so short, sweet, and to the point is best Your summary should set the theme for your resume with the rest of your resume being a validation of this theme and the benefits you offer Thank you to one of our resume experts, Jasmine Marchong, for this article and the resume advice. Tips on How to Buy Resume For Writing Services
Tips on How to Buy Resume For Writing ServicesIf you're one of the many people looking to buy resume for writing services, you're going to have to first of all decide what you want your CV to say. From my experience, I'd advise you to choose a format that has been used by hundreds of successful and/or ambitious people in order to highlight the main points of your experiences. For example, if you've been a journalist or a writer, it's likely that you've had experiences which would need to be written down.Nowadays, most employers prefer to hire people who are well-educated in the fields they operate. So how do you get yourself into such a situation? The most effective way is to concentrate on your strengths and let the rest fall where it may. After all, you're probably not going to land a job where the hiring manager doesn't like your work. You'll need to take stock of the CV that you've got when you make the decision to buy resume for writing services. Take note of the keywords that yo u've chosen to identify yourself to a potential employer. Using them correctly will make it easy for them to do their job of scanning through your CV. However, you should also put in all your personal details. For example, if you've got children, you may need to include your name and address on your CV. Of course, if you are doing this because you're a single mother, you might want to consider how you'd describe yourself to a man interested in young men. Why not write a bio about how you met him and what the two of you did while he was at college? It will help him to know more about you. What you should also do is research on how much space is given for personal details. I don't mean writing something like 'in stock with the group' - instead, think of this as having a little bit of space on your CV for a nice little anecdote. Don't worry about the space being over-crowded - that's why you're buying the service! You can write a CV in any one of the numerous CV format and find out which one you need. In fact, you can even write it entirely online. If you're lucky, you might be asked to provide some samples which you can then edit. If you're not that lucky, you may even have to hire an agency to do it for you.If you're an ambitious individual who wants to land a job and are able to write a CV, you're probably looking to build your career as a full-time mum. So, whether you're an academic or an entrepreneur, if you can write a CV then you'll have a big advantage over the rest. So don't waste time waiting until tomorrow to do it.

Halloween Costumes at Work Do I Have to Wear One
Halloween Costumes at Work Do I Have to Wear One Q: I am the assistant to the executive director of a nonprofit human services agency. The culture of the agency includes having the employees and the volunteers wear costumes to work on Halloween. Is it ok if I just wear a black pantsuit and bring a witchâs hat to work and leave it on my desk? When I joined the agency four years ago, I wore a black pantsuit on Halloween and purchased a witchâs hat, and kept the latter item visible next to my desk. Part of my work involves interacting with the public, and my personal standards include the belief that it is not correct to for staff to wear Halloween costumes in the workplace, especially when interacting with members of the public. I have followed this practice since that initial year, without engendering any negative comments from my manager or other staff members. This year my manager told us that staff members who wear costumes would get to go home early on Halloween, while anyone not wearing a costume would have to stay until the normal 5:00 closing time. I plan on following my usual practice of wearing a black pantsuit and bringing the witchâs hat to work. Almost all of the rest of the staff, including the manager, show up each Halloween in new and specially purchased costumes. Am I under any obligation to do the same? Read More: Should you wear a Halloween costume to a job interview? A: I wouldnât think so, not in any reasonable office. I mean, some might think that youâre being a bit of a party pooper, but itâs not something that should have any real ramifications for you at work. In fact, it seems clear that itâs not a requirement, based on your managerâs wording that people not wearing costumes will just work until their normal ending time. That said, for what itâs worth, I think youâre probably being a bit too much of a stickler when you say that people shouldnât wear Halloween costumes to work, especially if theyâre interacting with the public. There are certainly some jobs where thatâs true â" for example, if youâre a doctor, you shouldnât be giving patients bad news about their health while dressed as a giant banana or something â" but for most jobs, itâs not inherently unprofessional to wear a costume, and if the culture of a particular office is one where people do that, thatâs a perfectly reasonable way for that office to run. None of that obligates you to dress up if youâd rather not, and anyone who gives you crap about that is being a bit of a jerk, since different people have different preferences around this stuff. But at the same time, just as they shouldnât be judgy about your personal preferences on this, Iâd urge you not to judge the people who enjoy dressing up as incorrect either. Read More: Whereâs the line between pretty clothes and professional clothes? Q: My coworker keeps burping loudly and itâs disgusting My department is pretty quiet. Most of the floor is waist-high cubes, so weâre all fairly considerate of each other: earbuds for music, taking personal calls out to the stairwell, etc. Thereâs a line of small offices â" with doors â" down one side of the room. Our new IT help-desk guy sits in one of these offices and is friendly, seems to know what heâs doing, and gets things done. We know he has a hearing impairment and so we make allowances for his loud phone voice. The problem? He belches. Daily. Horrid, long, loud, disgusting belches. Even with his office door closed, some days itâs downright nauseating. I donât know how to approach him about it. His supervisor is in a different building altogether. Our HR âdepartmentâ is one over-worked person who mostly deals with hiring and benefits. I donât want to be a jerk about it, but itâs actually getting disruptive and somethingâs got to change. Any ideas? Read More: Can we ask a contagious coworker to contain his germs? A: Itâs possible that itâs a medical problem, in which case there likely isnât anything that he can do about it. But it might not be medical at all and you donât need to assume that it is without first talking to him. Iâd say it this way: âHey, I donât know if you realize that when you burp, we can hear it out here. Itâs pretty distracting! Anything you can do to control it or at least keep it quieter?â These questions are adapted from ones that originally appeared on Ask a Manager. Some have been edited for length.

Didnt Land The Internship 4 Steps To Take NOW - Work It Daily
Didnt Land The Internship 4 Steps To Take NOW - Work It Daily Itâs a bleak reality, but the fact of the matter is that not every young professional is going to nab the internship of their choice. While more than 97% of employers planned to hire interns or co-ops in 2014, there will always be competition. Even if youâre more than qualified, someone may still edge you out or have an additional skill the employer finds valuable. Related: How I Got An Internship With A Millionaire If you didnât land the internship of your dreams, donât freak out just yet. Looking at your situation as an opportunity can be the difference between finding your next job and not getting one at all. If you didn't land the internship, take these steps immediately: 1. Follow up with the hiring manager Not landing your ideal internship may seem like the end of the world, but it may actually be a blessing in disguise. Thereâs a reason why you didnât get the job - and the only way to understand what youâre missing is to follow up with the hiring manager. While this may seem intimidating, it can actually be an eye-opener. Here are some basic steps to take: Thank the hiring manager for giving you the opportunity. Then, ask for some insight into why you didnât land the internship. More often than not, it will have to do with your skills, educational experience, or accomplishments. At a minimum, youâll start a dialogue with an influential member of the organization, which can work out in your favor. 2. Revamp your application materials Once you know what you may be missing, itâs time to revamp your application materials. For example, if the hiring manager believed you didnât have enough relevant experience, be sure to highlight your key accomplishments in your cover letter and resume. In addition, using qualitative measurements, such as percentages, can help hiring managers see your actual contribution to a previous organization. Keep this in mind, as well: Hiring leaders may only spend six seconds reviewing a resume. In addition to great content, a well-designed resume and cover letter that house links to your social platforms or portfolio may coax them to stick around a little longer. 3. Apply to different departments Letâs say the hiring manager was impressed by your work history, but decided to go with a different candidate. Why not apply to a different department within the organization? With a new resume and cover letter under your wing, you may have an increased shot at landing the internship. Plus, since youâve already impressed the hiring manager, you could be first in line for another opening. Applying to different departments doesnât mean moving away from what you know. It means taking advantage of your valuable transferable skills. For instance, if your niche is advertising, applying for a marketing internship isnât too far from your expertise. Plus, a marketing internship can provide you with experience and skills development that you may not have had otherwise. 4. Look into alternative employment opportunities Believe it or not, there are alternative career opportunities to an internship. For instance, check out flexible work opportunities, including contracted positions or freelancing. While these alternatives may not match your definition of an internship, they can be just as beneficial to your professional development. Think of it this way: An internship is meant to provide you with relevant work experience and build your resume in the process. If you have a mentor and are gaining real-work experiences, alternative employment opportunities can be as good as a formal internship. If you didnât land your dream internship, itâs not the end of the road. Take the time to reevaluate your options and move forward with a plan in mind. What do you think? The Power Of Introverts When They Use Their Strengths
The Power Of Introverts When They Use Their Strengths There is no doubt that the workplace tends to be biased toward those who are mora charismatic and outgoing. However, introverts can also be highly effective influencers when they texas tea back and use their natural strengths.Jennifer Kahnweiler, is an expert on the subject of introverts. Her book, , helps us to understand the qualities that introverts possess, and how they can leverage these strengths to be successful.Bonnie Marcus Whats the difference between being shy and being introverted?Jennifer Kahnweiler Shy is typically associated with more psychological or social anxiety. So one can be shy and introverted, but they dont necessarily go together. Introversion is really how youre hardwired its not good, its not bad, theres no judgment there. Its just a temperament. And so, people oftentimes mix them up. The main differentiator I share with people is based on what Carl Jung said many years ago, its where you get your energy . If youre somebody whos more in your head, if youre really energized by whats going on inside yourself than you are on the outside world, then you typically tend to be more introverted. An extrovert gets charged up and gets energized by other people, by being out, by stimuli outside of themselves. And its not either/or. You can have both.Marcus What are the natural strengths introverts have that allow them to lean back and influence others?Kahnweiler Influencers make a difference by challenging the status quo and by provoking new ways of thinking, effecting change, and inspiring others to move forward. Quiet Influencers begin their influencing journey where they think and recharge best in quiet. Quiet Time provides energy, increases self awareness, and spurs creativity.Next comes Preparation. Through creating a strategy and asking questions, they become more comfortable and confident in their efforts to influence others. They may tap into their innate strength in Engaged Listening to build rapport and mutual understanding. Or they may choose Focused Conversations which are purposed driven dialogues in which they problem solve and work through conflicts with others. They may use their natural strength of Writing where they articulate authentic, well developed stttes to make a difference with others. Finally, Quiet Influencers consider how Thoughtful Social Media Platforms can advance their cause.Marcus Introverts are more apt to lean back and stimulate and inspire others. They hold back and let others take the stage. Does this make them better leaders?Kahnweiler There has been quite a bit of very exciting research that welches done by Adam Grant and Francesca Gino both at Wharton and at Harvard where they came out with a theory, or they proved a theory, pretty much, through a very large design, that introverted leaders really make the best leaders for what they were saying were more, outgoing or extroverted, employees or team members. And it welches simply b ecause they were leaning back.Have you ever been to a meeting where people are talking very vociferously about a topic, and there are a lot of individuals engaged. But then, theres that one person, at the end of the conference table who chimes in, and just nails it. Theres been all this chatter as one of the introverted leaders told me, he said, its like having all these cackling geese. And he says, he seems himself as the great blue heron that swoops in with the compilation, with the concise statement that really sums it all up.Marcus Women introverts have extra challenges especially if they work in male dominated organizations or industries. They get cited on performance reviews for not speaking up and are told to lean in more if they want to get noticed. What are some tips for these introverted women who often remain invisible?Kahnweiler When I work with women who are introverted, I help them learn basic tangible skills such as icebreaking skills and how to start a conversation. I have suggested women join with other women. These professional groups, may be a local group with women across different fields from different organizations, or if youre in a large organization, network with women throughout the organization. Thats one key way to start to practice these skills to gain confidence. Because thats really the key its not like you have to really be an expert small talk person. But you could practice a little here and start to believe in yourself more. Thats a big part of it as well, the lack of confidence. And then, the other strategy, of course is to gain a mentor, somebody who can help you navigate some of those tricky interactions with men.The bias that organizations have toward the more charismatic outgoing personality is apparent. Women are coached to lean in more if they want to succeed. The message here for introverted women, however,is clear. You can lean back and use your natural strengths of keen observation and listening to assess the environm ent and people and make powerful meaningful one on one connections and conversations. Its not always about being the loudest or the first to speak up.Leaning back is a great first step to leverage your natural strengths, influence others, and show leadership potential.--Award winning entrepreneur and Forbes and Business Insider columnist, Bonnie Marcus, M.Ed., assists professional women to successfully position and promotethemselves to advance their careers, and consults with companies to retain and supporttheir female talent. Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers
Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers Integrity is a quality managers and corporate leaders need to have. But in reality, 35.4 percent ofcompany leadership tells at least one white lieper day. PER DAYSurprisingly enough, managers arent lying to their employees, but to their supervisors. Which means, if you manage a team, you might be on the receiving end of these lies. Its even more disappointing that employees often see their managers as having poor seelenlage ethicsan astonishing 80.1 percent. This is not the kind of leadership we want to have. Even when it is a small, seemingly insignificant lie, lying is toxic in the workplace. But how to prevent it, or perhaps just offset the damage? Here are four quick ideas to help you keep an office worthy of Honest AbeDont leave room for liesInstead of telling an employee how great they are and how valued their work is with superfluous words, use metrics.Set m easurable objectives to show employees what their work is truly worth. This saves managers from the temptation of using phrases that dont always match the employee. Most employees dont fit the youre one of our best employees, good job, or heres your raise category. Keep in mind that employees want to help achieve company objectives, but many dont know what those are. Be as transparent as possible and close every feedback loop.Recognize that omission is part of the harte nussDeception in the office goes beyond blatant lies. Say Joe processed an insurance claim. He accidentally mixed up some numbers, was aware of the mistake, but didnt say anything. If he doesnt get caught, what does it matter?Lying by omissionperpetuates the habit. It doesnt seem like a true lie, however. Allowing another part to come to the wrong conclusion without correction is just as big of a problem as blatantly lying. Again, transparency in reporting can solve this issue, at least in part. Look to 360 reviews a nd dont forget to positively motivate those who arent hiding part of the story.Pick your battlesWhile roughly 1 out of 3 of allemployees tell one white lie at least once per day, that doesnt make the habit any less of a problem. However, management should learn that a one-size-fits-all strategy may simply alienate workers. Instead, focus on lies that directly affect performance or other members of the team. Even when confrontation is difficult, it is important to point out unacceptable behavior, as allowing one person to lie continuously can propagate the behavior. Implementing an intranet with few closed groups can help this behavior. Another idea? Make team goals (and fulfillment) available across the enterprise to avoid confusion.Build in AccountabilityIt is easy to lie about a project or a deadline when no one is accountable. If no one is responsible for it, who will speak up for it? Setting a good accountability policy will place a standard on management and employees alike. It will ensure everyone holds to the same policies. It is a team effort to hold each other accountable for corporate actions. Encourage your employees to keep accountablefor their own work byelend covering up mistakes Own up to mistakes. If mistakes happened, they will not stay hidden in the long run. Encourage this by not overreacting when someone makes an honest mistake. Instead, use it as a teachable moment. Not blaming others Again, own up to mistakes.Dont put them on someone else. This not only creates for a hostile work environment, it makes others distrustful. Leaders can ensure this doesnt happen by asking employees to show their work, this generally reveals the guilty party.Do more than the minimum Some employees barely meet requirements. Get all team members on board with consistent process improvement. Some will scoff, others will rise to the challenge, more will want to at least keep up with the higher bar set.Meet expectations Its an adult environment. The workplace is no longer about good try, or youll get em next time comments. Employees either meet expectations or they dont. While its important to praise employees for a job well done (gratitude is especially effective) an effective leader will not sugarcoat a poorly executed plan.Pinpointing PinocchioWhat needs to happen when someone deliberately lies in the workplace? If it is a habitual tendency, management needs to address the issue. Lying in the workplace can greatly depreciate the environment for employees and the quality of work. The bigger the lie, the bigger the problem they all need attention. There arethree options in dealing with a liar. An employee can confront the liar, report them, or ignore the lies. The latter option is toxic for the workplace.
