Marines Engineer Equipment Mechanic (MOS 341)

kriegsmarines Engineer Equipment Mechanic (MOS 341)Marines Engineer Equipment Mechanic (MOS 341)As the name suggests, a Marine engineer equipment mechanic is responsible for maintenance and repairs of vehicles with diesel engines. It is considered a primary military occupation specialty (MOS) and the rank range for engineer equipment mechanics in the Marines goes from private up to staff sergeant. Think of this job as similar to a garage mechanic. They get to know the maschine vehicles under their care inside and out, to performpreventive maintenance and make repairs. Theyll work with a wide variety of different motor vehicles, from diesel engines and gasoline and diesel-driven construction equipment like as tractors, power shovels, and road machinery. They may also work on and repair specialized equipment like air compressors, concrete mixers and other engine-driven or towed construction equipment. Having mechanics in a branch of the military that has to be battle ready often with l ittle notice helps keep things running smoothly. There are some vehicles in the Marine Corps that engineer equipment mechanics dont work on, obviously, including assault amphibious vehicles (AAV). There are other job specialties that work on other specific kinds of vehicles, a few of which are listed below. Anyone interested in pursuing the engineer equipment job in the Marines would be well-served by having some knowledge of vehicles and engines before enlisting. It will likely come in handy during the formal training on the military vehicles these Marines are responsible for, as well as within the job itself. Job Requirements In order to be an engineer equipment mechanic in the Marines, recruits will need a mechanical maintenance (MM) score from the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) of 95 or higher. Once theyve completed basic training, recruits will complete the construction equipment repairer course, at the Marine detachment at the U.S. Army Engineer School at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Also, engineer equipment mechanics need to have normal color vision. Similar Jobs A related job to the engineer equipment mechanic is MOS 1345, the engineer equipment operator. The Marines in this job are tasked with operating gasoline or diesel-engine powered, self-propelled, skid-mounted, and towed engineer construction equipment. It can include accessories and allied equipment used in earth moving, grading, excavation, logging, clearing, and landing operations. These are much larger and more specialized vehicles than the ones used by their counterparts in MOS 1341. Theres also MOS 2146, which is the main battle tank (MBT), repairer/technician. The duties of this job include vehicle maintenance of much larger and even more specialized military vehicles, such as the MBT tank retriever and the armored vehicle launched bridge. The Marines have a wide variety of vehicles they use for their combat and day-to-day operations. Having mechanics with spec ialized skills for each vehicle in question makes sense to prevent breakdowns and other problems that could lead to delay and jeopardize missions. 8 Reasons Why Your Employee Referral Program Is Failing

8 Reasons Why Your Employee Referral Program Is Failing 8 Reasons Why Your Employee Referral Program Is Failing Employee referrals are easily one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways of attracting talent to organizations. You can count on new hires referred by current employees to be fully immersed within your company culture in a matter of weeks. But sometimes employee referral programs dont bring desired effects and result in few, if any, quality hires. Here are some key reasons why your employee referral program might be failing and some tips to help you fix it1. No Information Flow About Open PositionsAs a recruiter, you clearly know what positions are open at the company. But if you never communicate these open positions to employees, how do you expect them to bring in quality candidates? Consequently, few employees participate in the referral program, and it slowly become irrelevant as a source of great candidates. You can use automatic tools to keep the communication flow open between you and your employees, or simply send weekly or monthly emails in whichyou list all open positions.2. You Fail to Keep Candidates in the LoopOrganizations often fail to engage with a candidate for weeks after interviewing them. Naturally, job seekers grow frustrated and turn back to the employees who referred them in the first place. Its your job to keep both candidates and employees in the loop about the recruitment process. It is also important to group referred candidatesseparately from candidates sourced by other means. This will allow you to stay informed about who referred whom and whether or not your employee referral program is actually resulting in great hires.3. You Never Change Referral RewardsIf you stick to the same referral rewards for a long time, youre effectively failing to excite employees about the opportunity to refer their friends. Naturally, as employees lose motivation to participate, you lose out on quality hires through their referrals. Sh ake things up from time to time to keep employees engaged in your referral program.4. You Use an Ineffective ATSApplicant tracking systems (ATS) are great for sorting through many candidate profiles and matching them to keywords in job descriptions.Butby reducing candidates to mere keywords, youre losing out on their industry insights, drive to innovate, and/or learning capabilities. When hiring through employee referrals, avoid running these resumes through the ATS, but keep another channel open to grant them priority in the recruiting process.5. You Fail to Respond to Referrals in a Timely FashionWhen and how you respond to employee referrals has a huge impact on your employee referral program. Many recruiters make the mistake of failing to respond personally to every referral that comes their way. A lack of a response or a response that comes too late can damage the performance of your employee referral program.Respond to each referralin a timely manner, and youll showemployees that their referrals are treated seriously and are worth the effort.6. You Never Set Expectations for Your ProgramLaunching a referral program without a clear objective is pointless. Determine what such a program can accomplish and set clear expectations for recruiters and employees alike. Keep communicating these expectationsthroughout the duration of the program and youll never find yourself breaking your promises.7.Your Site Isnt Mobile-OptimizedAreferral website thatisnt optimized for mobile is a serious mistake. It will limit the number of referrals arriving at your doorstep because employees do mora work through mobile devices rather than their computers. Optimize your website for mobile, and youll be offering a great experience for employees willing to refer a quality hire on the go.8. You Exclude Some Employees From the ProgramExcluding certain employees from the program e.g., senior managers or HR professionals is another bad idea. Your motive might be transparency and fa irness of the process, but by excluding these people fromthe program, youll affect employee motivation. These figures should lead by example, and their participation in the program matters. If they dont participate, why should other employees? If you dont want to lose a considerable number of quality hires, address these problems with your employee referral program. Youll be on your way to making the mostof your current employees and the talent pools they bring with themselves.

Study finds Long work hours increase womens risk of diabetes

Study finds Long work hours increase womens risk of diabetesStudy finds Long work hours increase womens risk of diabetesIf you work punishingly long hours, you may be physically fine now, but you are increasing your risk of not being fine in the future. A new study published inBMJ Diabetes Research Care found that overwork can take an unseen toll on womens health. Analyzing over 7,000 workers over a 12-year period in Ontario, Canada, the researchers found a link between diabetes risk and overwork for women, even when accounting for other diabetes risk factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, and weight.Working 45 hours or more per week was associated with an increased incidence of diabetes among women, but not men, the study concluded. Identifying modifiable risk factors such as long work hours is of major importance to improve prevention strategies and orient policy making.45 hours of work a week increases diabetes riskWomen working 45 hours or more a week had a 51% higher risk o f diabetes than women who worked 35 hours a week or less.Men may have been spared from this particular health risk, but overwork in general is bad for everyone.Although some work cultures still reward long hours, studies have proven that it does not help employees get ahead. In one five-year study on 5,000 employees and managers, management professor Morten Hansen found that if you work more than 50 hours a week, your performance stalls. It gets worse the more you work. If you work more than 65 hours a week, your performance and productivity takes a sharp tumble. So next time your job asks you to pull an all-nighter to get the project done, recognize that this demand is going to have long-term consequences on your health and your ability to get future jobs done.

The Benefits Employees REALLY Want - Spark Hire

The Benefits Employees REALLY Want - Spark HireHow do I keep my best employees? This is the question that many companies are asking today, when skilled talent is limited. My first answer to this question is that it all depends on the employee. Some employees are motivated by money, while others are motivated by time off or just general acts of appreciation. However, the big motivator with employees today is FLEXIBILITY. If you are that employer who demands that your employees be in the office from 8AM 5PM every day, Im here to tell you that its time to lighten upTodays employees are looking for benefits such as flexible hours, the ability to work remotely, and demonstrated trust from their employers.FlexibilityFace time in the office from 8AM 5PM is notlage appealing to employees today. While most people are trying to earn a living and be successful, sometimes life gets in the way, requiring flexibility with work schedules. Your employees are looking for flexibility to work outside o f the standard office hours and the ability to do this without feeling guilty. Are there times when they need to be in the office? Absolutely It is your responsibility to ensure employees are aware of times they are expected to be in the office so that they understand expectations and plan accordingly.Working RemoteThere are times when it simply makes sense to work from home when a child is sick, when waiting on the plumber to fix leaky pipes, or when working on a large project which requires greater focus.Todays corporate world versus the corporate world we experienced 10 years ago greatly differs. We can do much of our business virtually, thanks to internet and mobile phones. We no longer have to be in a specific building or location to conduct most business.Allowing your employees the ability to work remote is seen a huge benefit today. Working from home saves on gasoline costs, food costs, and can provide a healthier lifestyle. Time and money spent commuting to work can be spent t aking a walk or going to the gym. It is also much easier to plan healthier meals at home rather than rushing over to the fast food drive-thru on an already rushed lunch break crammed with various other errands.TrustThe one thing that your employees find most desirable is TRUST, which is the exact thing that is demonstrated by providing the previously mentioned benefits. But how will I know they are working if they arent in the office every day?You must first hire trustworthy employees. In addition to this, you must have specific metrics and deliverables in place in order to evaluate their work. This can be difficult for many managers to get past. However, if your employees are reliable and and have given you no reason to distrust them, there is no reason not to trust them outside of the office.Do you offer a flexible schedule or remote working situation for your employees? What has been your experience with this?

This is when its ok to call in sick after a breakup

This is when its ok to call in sick after a breakupThis is when its ok to call in sick after a breakupYouve just experienced a breakup and leid only might you feel sad, angry, disappointed and emotionally and physically exhausted (or numb), you might also feel like you cant possibly go to work in the morning. Now what?In the perfect world, we could all take as many days off as we need to mourn the end of our relationship. But we dont, so as much as you might want to tell your boss that youll be MIA for the foreseeable future, your options are likely much mora limited. How limited though? The answer is it depends.Whether or leid you can take a day off of work to cry it all out and try to regroupor if you instead have no other choice than to get straight back to work without missing a beat, depends on two thingsWhat kind of employer you work for, andWhat kind of employee youve beenLets delve into those two thingsWhat kind of employer you haveGood employers understand and untersttzungsan gebot the fact that their employees are human beings. And what that means in practice is that your boss or manager will realize that sometimes, things will happen in your personal life thatll end up affecting your work life more than it usually would. In such a case, a great employer would give you ample space and freedom to pull yourself together when whatever personal life issue knocks you downwhether thats a breakup or any other possible personal issue (family emergencies, having your property damaged or broken into, etc.) This space allows you to think and / or grieve in a healthy, private way.Without having this bit of breathing room away from your everyday work grind, youll likely carry your stress and emotions to work with you, which (as supportive employers know) will ultimately impact the company in a negative way either by impacting your own work or others around you. Here are some signs that youve got a great boss or employer who would be supportive of you taking the day o ff after a breakupWhat kind of employee you areEven the best employers have to set expectations for their employees and then hold them accountable to those expectations. As a matter of fact, its almost impossible to be a great employer without clear guidelines and consequences. While most workplace guidelines are indeed pretty clear and straightforward, great employers typically allow some room for crises in your personal life, self-care, mental health issues, and more. Theres one catch, however great employees dont abuse the privilege they have.So if youve missed work unexpectedly more than a handful of times, are on a performance improvement plan, or received less-than-stellar ratings on your most recent performance review, you might not be in a position to call in sick after your breakup. If this is the case, approach work with a positive attitude. Consider it a sanctuarya welcome distraction from the chaos youre experiencing in your personal life. Go to work, work hard, choose n ot to talk about what youre experiencing, and enjoy the break.you have a workplace wellness programyour employer offers an employee assistance program (EAP)your boss cares about your well-being on a regular basis and asks how youre feelingyour boss and/or coworkers encourage you to go home when youre distracted by something thats going on in your personal lifeyour employer has consistently had positive reviews from current and former employeesyour boss talks about how theyre feeling and/or takes a day off when theyre facing personal battlesyou get personal days (or other paid time off, such as sick days) that you can use without explanation each yearOn the other hand, if youve observed your manager making disconcerting or unsupportive comments about other employees whove taken days off for personal reasons, or have seen a fellow employee go through a breakup too and not get support from their manager, you might want to go to work tomorrowand then look for another job. This article wa s originally published on Kununu.

How to plan a trip to cruise Australia on the Queen Mary 2

How to plan a trip to cruise Australia on the Queen Mary 2How to plan a trip to cruise Australia on the Queen Mary 2Sensational SydneyIf you want to explore Australia and experience both the cultural and natural wonders of this enormous country, the Queen Mary 2 is the way to do it. During this years World Voyage the QM2 cruised into eight ports from Sydney to Perth, including Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Margaret River, Whitsunday Island, and Kangaroo Island. Whats exciting about the Queens annual adventure is that, with just a little planning, you can join the ship alfruchtwein anywzu siche in the world and binnensee your choice of countries and cities. We chose a ten-day, roundtrip, Sydney to Sydney cruise.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreRoyalty, VIPs movie starsThe Queen Mary 2 is the flagship of the Cunard Line and she is, without exception, the most luxurious passenger ship ever built. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II christened this floating palace named after her grandmother. The queen proclaimed, I name this ship Queen Mary 2. May God bless her and all who sail on her. Countless VIPs have been welcomed onboard during the QM2s 14 years at sea, including Presidents Donald Trump and George H. W. Bush, French President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Hollywood luminaries Uma Thurman, George Lucas, Lenny Kravitz, Ed Sheeran, and Helen Mirren. The latter won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the movie The Queen and inscribed a painting of Her Majesty in the ships casino, From one Queen to another. Last year, Aussie star Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Zac Efron, and Zendaya celebrated the premiere of their movie, The Greatest Showman, with a dinner dance on the ship in New York City and everyone onboard joined the party.Majesty of the high seasCunard launched the original Queen Mary in 1934, and it welches considered the g rand dame of ships, carrying Hollywood royalty such as Marlene Dietrich, Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, and Clark Gable during the heyday of transatlantic ocean travel. The glamour and allure of cruising in true luxury lives on in her successor. In fact, today this bastion of seagoing extravagance is glossier than ever, after recently undergoing an extensive $132 million stem-to-stern refurbishment. The ship famously allows pets on board, employing a kennel master to mind dogs and cats, and they didnt forget Fido and Fifi in the QM2 renovation, adding more kennels as well as a kennel lounge where owners can hang out with their furry friends.Book a posh grill suiteThe QM2 has multiple sailing options, with a category for everyone. That said, the two top choices are the Queens Grill and Princess Grill Suites. These staterooms are the ultimate in luxury - with both seating and dining areas, walk-in closets, and spacious private balconies with chaises longues for lounging. Queens Grill guests have their own personal butler, too. The tafelgeschirr is unparalleled we had an attentive butler, tour director, and concierge that finessed our every wish. Everything is so impeccable, you might want to consider staying on forever. Do yourself a favor and splurge for first class seats with a flatbed. We stayed at the Park Hyatt because of its location on Sydney Harbour. Be sure to reserve a room with a terrace overlooking the Sydney Opera House, the citys major contribution to zwischenstaatlich architecture and art. This is the citys top hotel, where all the stars stay, among them Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Kate Hudson. Elton John stays so frequently he keeps his own piano there. The Hyatts bar and restaurant also have terrific views of the harbor, naturally. The chef is Etienne Karner, who trained in Michelin-starred kitchens in France before landing in Sydney. Order the sumptuous tasting dinner which includes the signature dish kangaroo tartar with quail egg, truffle mayo, radish, and sesame crisps. This goes beautifully with a 2016 Hans Herzog Pinot Gris or a glass of Champagne.www.hyatt.comSpend a day or two seeing Sydney before boarding the QM2. Our cruise started and ended in Sydney, so we had plenty of time to see the top attractions. Here are the best. The Sydney Opera HouseOur Hyatt balcony overlooked the Opera House, which is arguably the eighth wonder of the world. We got up early to see the dawn break over the landmark, an unforgettable moment, and we promptly had Jonathan, the hotels prize-winning concierge, book a tour to see the inside.A UNESCO World Heritage siteJrn Utzon, an unknown Danish architect, designed the building in 1955, winning an international design competition. Weirdly, Utzons world-famous sculptural design was initially rejected by the judges, but finally the renowned architect Eero Saarinen convinced the panel to choose it. Construction began in 1959, but wasnt completed until 1973, thanks to a string of snafus, including cost overruns the final construction costs totaled $79 million. In 1966, payment problems forced Utzon to resign from the project, and he left Australia and never saw his completed masterpiece. He passed away in 2008, a year after it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.Despite its name, the Opera House has multiple purposes and presents many types of performances in addition to opera, including symphonic and popular music, and classic and experimental theater. We took the 430 pm tour, the belastung of the day, and simply stayed, had some Champagne, and saw Limbo, a sexy cabaret act.Mr. WongAfter the show, we had a late dinner at the Cantonese hot spot Mr. Wong where the food and the people watching are excellent. Tucked away down an alley, its very popular a nd reservations are a must. We had a delicious dim sum, Peking duck with all the trimmings, and for dessert a decadent fried vanilla ice cream with butterscotch. Divine.www.merivale.comSydney Harbour BridgeIn the morning, we hired a speedboat to take us around Sydney Harbour, which is the center of life in Australias biggest city. We kept an eye out for native daughter Cate Blanchett, who has been known to pilot a small skiff around the harbor. Alas, we didnt see her. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, affectionately known as The Coat Hanger thanks to its arched design, is another memorable icon of the city. Opened in 1932, the bridge took eight years to complete. High-wire artist Philippe Petit crossed the bridge on a tightrope in 1973, but you can legally cross it on foot via a pedestrian walkway. Its an easy stroll of about 30 minutes, with magnificent views. You can also ride a bicycle across. Those more adventurous - and not afraid of heights - can scale the top of the bridge on a g uided bridge climb.www.bridgeclimb.comBondi Beach, Icebergs ClubBondi Beach is one of Sydneys top sights and the most popular of the many stretches of golden sand rimming this sunny city. Its only a few miles from the center of town, and easily accessible. Here you might see Justin Bieber, Liev Schreiber, or Naomi Watts body surfing. Our driver dropped us off at the end of the clifftop coastal walk, a spectacularly scenic route that we strolled until we found Icebergs, Bondis top beach club. The place has killer views of the crescent-shaped beach and endless blue water. You can check into the club to use the facilities, including the Olympic size saltwater pool. The restaurant is usually totally booked, but we snagged a table in the bar we didnt have a white tablecloth as do tables in the main dining room, but the burger was juicy, and the views were just as fabulous.Boarding the QM2 - timing countsThe QM2 had dramatically moored in front of our balcony at the hotel looking out at t he ship and the Opera House together was a rare privilege. Time to pack and boardThe QM2 runs like a Swiss clock so we were able to check-in effortlessly and seamlessly. Be smart and check ahead to find out when guests will finish disembarking and boarding from early flights. This is usually between 930 am and 2 pm. Presto smooth boarding at 3 pm allowed plenty of time to explore the ship before she sailed at 930 pm. Uniformed porters brought the luggage to our stateroom, which had another perfect view of the Opera House. It doesnt get old.Exploring the QM2The staff unpacked our cases while we explored the ship, which has a Canyon Ranch Spa, a gigantic movie theater that plays current blockbusters, the only planetarium at sea, a Vegas-styled showroom that features elaborate musicals, multiple gourmet restaurants, tea rooms, a Champagne bar, a ballroom with a 12-piece orchestra, a disco, a gym with a killer view of the horizon, five outdoor and indoor swimming pools, and seven Jacuzz is. There are also games galore, including shuffleboard, ping pong, paddle tennis, backgammon, bingo, bridge, and way too many other activities to list. Additionally, the QM2 boasts the largest library at sea, with breathtaking ocean panoramas an hourly schedule of things to do, including lectures by famous authors, actors, and scientists classical concerts piano and harp recitals a long list of fitness classes, including yoga, stretch, and circuit training and gambling in a fully equipped casino. Daily laps around the deck (three times equals one mile), leisurely naps in a deckchair under a colorful plaid wool blanket from Scotland, and a nightcap in the Commodore Club were just a few of the things to look forward to.The sail awayWe ordered Champagne on our balcony, so we could watch the changing light and the sunset over the famous roofline sails of the Opera House. Sailing out of Sydney Harbor past the Opera House on the QM2 is one of the most memorable visual experiences you wil l ever have, akin to watching the mist lift to reveal the Taj Mahal from the presidential suite at the Oberoi Amarvillas in Agra or seeing the Pyramids for the first time. With the stars and moon lighting the way, tiny tugboats guided us out of the harbor. As the ship rounded the Opera House, the sails seemed to blow in the wind, and with lights ablaze it was a sight to behold and treasure forever. Its Australias Eiffel Tower, Londons Big Ben, and New Yorks Empire State Building. You need to experience this.At seaOn our first night at sea, Captain Peter Philpott invited us to a cocktail party to meet the ships officers. This was also the first of four formal nights, so dont forget to bring your jewels as this black-tie ritual is very much alive on the QM2. We quizzed the captain about what we could expect to see in New Zealand, our ultimate destination. The best lunch to eat, based on how you're feeling The best lunch to eat, based on how you're feeling Though most Americans will chomp on whatever is closest - or from whoever delivers - at their desk for lunch, it’s not the best strategy for busy professionals. You know how the saying goes, but allow us to reiterate: You are what you eat.And though greasy, carb-rich food is comforting when you’re stressed, hungover - or um, both - it isn’t the best solution if you want to ignite your productivity and jumpstart your creativity. Instead, nutritionists say you should choose what you eat based on how you’re feeling.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! This way, your lunch can keep your happy mojo going, or cure any workday woes you’re suffering from. Here, no matter if you’re creative, exhausted or uninspired, are the right mid-day grub to pick:You’re on a roll: Protein-packed finger foods.Perhaps it seems simplistic, but registered dietician and associate clinical professor Keith-Thomas Ayoob says if you are blasting through your to-do list like a boss, you should probably keep doing whatever you’re doing. How come? Well, it’s working! And if you want to continue the energy, he suggests keeping lunch light but packed with protein.“An ounce or two of cheese, fresh fruit like pears and a handful of almonds will fit the bill,” he continues. “It’s good to have ‘finger food’ so you don’t get sidetracked with lots of containers and dishes and such, and enough high-quality protein and healthy fat to keep you from getting distracted.”You’re feeling anxious: Chopped salad or noodle soup.Maybe you just sent your baby to preschool. Or, your partner is going through a stressful season at work. Maybe your parent isn’t feeling so hot, and you have more questions lingering than answered. Whatever is making you feel overwhelmed or anxious, it’s hard to leave those all-consuming feelings at the door when you arrive at the office. Her e, distraction is actually your friend, according to registered dietician and nutritionist Bridget Swinney. Her suggestion is to choose something that’s healthy but takes time and concentration to eat. This might be a chopped salad, a bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup, or perhaps sushi â€" if you struggle with chopsticks. As she puts it, sometimes just slowing down can help you feel calmer. You’re feeling creative: An omelet. Ayoob says if your brain feels scrambled with inspiration, have some scrambled eggs! Because they’re loaded with the important brain nutrient of choline, it’ll help you keep those juices flowing toward your work. And if you add in mushrooms? It’s brownie points for your mood.Ayoob says that because mushrooms have vitamin B6, you’ll continue to feel happier and jazzed. “Follow this lunch with some strawberries - and all their antioxidants set you up for a creative afternoon, without feeling heavy,” he adds. You’re feeling exhausted: Comfort food. Y ou’re tired, you don’t have the energy to do, well, anything, but you still have to report to your gig. Swinney says while comfort food can indeed be the answer, it’s not permission to go deep-fried and unhealthy since that’ll make you feel even more sluggish.“Try to find a home-style meal like meatloaf or pot roast, with potatoes, carrots and green beans. Perhaps a grilled cheese sandwich or breakfast? Or have a hearty, creamy soup like clam chowder,” she suggests. These will soothe your soul and hopefully give you enough energy to make it through closing time. You’re so not inspired: Fish. Especially if you’re in a field that demands your superstar ideas, feeling like you lack any type of inspiration or brilliance can threaten your confidence. To the rescue is fish, which Ayoob explains is packed with omega-3 fats that prevent you from getting too down-in-the-dumps as it stabilizes your mood.“You can keep it simple just by trading that individual can of tuna for a can of salmon, or go all the way and spring for 1/4 pound of smoked salmon. Herring and sardines also work, and you can stuff them into a whole-grain pita or eat with whole grain crackers,” he continues.Once you’ve had your lunch, snack on walnuts and grapes in the afternoon to keep the vibes moving. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Things Every Resume Should Include

Things Every Resume Should Include Things Every Resume Should Include No matter what type of a job you are applying for, there are some basic elements every resume should contain. You should always include these things in your resume. Contact Information You may feel there is no need to explicitly mention this. It is a given that every resume should have your contact information. But, after writing tons about skills and work experiences, applicants tend to forget to write this fundamental element. So, you need to check thoroughly if you have provided correct information or not. Include your full name along with your full address, phone number, and email id. Also, you may include links to your professional websites, like LinkedIn or your blog. Do use a professional email address, rather than something like coolpriya@gmail.com Professional Summary and Title Every resume needs to have a title to make it clear what job profile you are asking for. Your summary along with the title should tell the recruiters what your goals are clearly. Be very specific and write to the point in this section. This will make you look professional and convince them that you are needed for the job. That is why it is essential for you to include this section in your resume. Keywords from Job Posting This is one of the aspects that people usually overlook while getting busy writing a perfect resume. The recruiters want to see a specific set of words in your resume, which they often include in their job postings. You need to carefully add the words, which are used most in these postings, without making it obvious. Achievements Any achievements or awards of yours are of great importance and must be included in every resume. They tell the recruiters what you have done to contribute to the success of your team or department. Your accomplishments tell others what your strengths are, making them a significant part in the process of getting selected.

Federal Employees Will Help Harvey Survivors Recover

Federal Employees Will Help Harvey Survivors Recover Federal Employees Will Help Harvey Survivors Recover Federal Employees Will Help Harvey Survivors Recover By Kathryn Troutman, Published September 1, 2017 There is a silver lining to Harvey’s historic storm clouds, which will deeply affect parts of Texas and Louisiana for years to come: It’s those countless residents who ventured out in their own boats and boots to rescue their neighbors, demonstrating an inspiring drive to serve. Now, whether through existing civil service job vacancies or future ones that will be created in response to this monumental disaster, citizens will have professional opportunities to serve their government and its people in their time of need. “The federal government has a large role in disaster response â€" everything from weather forecasters at NOAA (50+ current openings) to FEMA workers (50+ openings), professionals at HUD (50+ openings), and the USDA (200+ openings),” said Mallory Barg Bulman, vice president of research and evaluation at The Partnership for Public Service, in an interview with The Resume Place. “And we have leadership and staffing vacancies at some of these agencies.” If the federal response to Hurricane Katrina is any indication, the looming recovery and rebuilding challenges will require the good work of thousands of federal employees in many agencies and departments. The Department of Transportation (200+ openings) will help with the logistics of getting supplies and materials where they need to go, often in the most trying of circumstances. The Department of Education (6,000+ openings) may be called on to help re-register schoolchildren whose families were displaced by Harvey. The Labor Department (25+ openings) may be needed to aid displaced workers. The United States Health Service (1,000+ openings) likely will monitor flooded areas for outbreaks of infectious disease; even professionals in Veterinary Medical Assistance (several openings) may be needed, as they were after Katrina. Employees in other federal departments may be asked to fill in on the disaster response. “Beginning in late 2005, employees from across the government went for short-term tours of duty in affected areas, to help out,” said Bulman. The IRS (about 200 openings), which has many call center employees available when it’s not tax season, temporarily redeployed some of those workers to answer calls from hurricane survivors seeking services from FEMA. Much technical expertise will be required, including Army Corps of Engineers (500+ openings) assessments of the successes and failures of the infrastructure that was designed to protect Houston and other communities in the region from flooding. And Bulman points out that in the aftermath of Katrina, the government deployed a geo-addressing system to help homeowners communicate the location of their homes on blocks of New Orleans where street signs had been washed away. The opportunities to lend a helping hand as a federal employee will be as varied as Harvey was fearsome. It will take weeks, months, and maybe years for all federal recovery efforts to take shape. But the work is already underway, and it is likely to accelerate rapidly. So take a look at the thousands of job announcements posted now on USAJOBS, or contact us if we can be of assistance. Study The motherhood penalty exists even if youre not a mother yet

Study The 'motherhood penalty' exists even if you're not a mother yet Study The 'motherhood penalty' exists even if you're not a mother yet Married, childless women face their own type of motherhood penalty, a new, large-scale study found. The “motherhood penalty” refers to women finding that becoming working mothers often leads to decreased pay (sometimes from working fewer hours), being promoted less, and other disadvantages in the workplace.New  research,  published this month by the IZA Institute of Labor Economics based in Bonn, Germany, shows that married women without children are often less attractive job candidates when up against women with older children â€" at least for part-time work. Why? Because of the risk that they may get pregnant and have children, foisting unwanted costs and loss of productivity onto an employer.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Researchers send out 9,000 job applications for fictional candidates, all aged 30, to part-time jobs across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The women’s’ characteristics were varied across applications.   Their fictional women’s stats were listed as single and childless, married and childless, married with young children, and married with older children. (This information is standard to include on resumes in the above countries.) Resumes from men were also sent out.Researchers found that for part-time jobs, women with older children received a higher response rate than other groups of women â€" such as women with young children and married women without children.“Parents of older children appear to be ideal candidates” to employers, researchers concluded, due to the fact that they were unlikely to become pregnant again and because their childcare schedule was more predictable, requiring fewer absences.Married women with two older children were 13% more likely to receive a callback than a married childless woman. The single lifeWhen childless married women went up against childless single women, the childless married women had a 4-6% lower callback rate.“Women without children applying for a part-time job may be perceived as planning to become mothers soon â€" especially if they are married,” researchers wrote. These advantages and disadvantages disappeared for full-time job applications, partly due to cultural reasons â€" in the German-speaking countries included, part-time work is considered to be work for women juggling family obligations. In applying for full-time work, it is assumed mothers applying for full-time work have childcare arrangements firmly in place â€" and possibly that women planning on having children might not be applying for full-time work.Regardless, the discrimination against married childless women found in the research is remarkable because it shows that women can be faulted in the workplace not just for being a mother, but for looking like you might someday be one.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

4 ways you can have a hard reset at work

4 ways you can have a hard reset at work 4 ways you can have a hard reset at work Whether you’re in a productivity rut or you’ve lost all passion for your job, having a hard reset can be beneficial at work. It gives you time to pause before diving headfirst into another huge project while doubting your reasons for being there in the first place.Keeping all this in mind, here are four ways to make this happen by shaking things up.Make “inbox zero” your missionResearch has found that 24% of Americans think getting to this point is an impossibility, but this is a major way to clear up your inbox clutter.Do things like responding immediately, coming up with a plan for emails you can’t do this with, and being brutal when it comes to deleting messages.I’ll also be the first to admit that personally, I have a lot inbox cleaning to do, but I can dream! I’m doing a lot worse than the average employee, whose inbox reportedly contains an average of 199 unread emails, according to separate research.Clean up your crowded deskIt’s really difficult to change your mindset when your desk is littered with pens, folders, books, and the like.  So act like you’re doing some spring cleaning and make some big changes to your workspace that will help you focus.Buy a plant, an oil diffuser for a pleasant scent, and give yourself permission to throw out whatever you don’t need.Have a one-on-one meeting with your managerDuring this meeting, you can talk about long-term and short-term projects you’re working on, and also use this as an opportunity to get feedback about your overall performance. You can also use this time with your boss to talk about any concerns that have been nagging you, and maybe even start some preliminary planning for your future at the company.Just be sure to prepare first so that you walk in all caught up like you would if it was a performance review.Re-assess your career goalsWrite them down in a notebook or type them out on a document - whatever works best for you.Taking the time to write down goals you’ve set over the years gives you the chance to actively edit them, and put your new notes in an important spot that you can refer back to. You learn something new every day at work, so your perspective on what you want for your career is bound to change over time.

How to Get Your First Creative Job in Advertising

How to Get Your First Creative Job in Advertising How to Get Your First Creative Job in Advertising The task of breaking into advertising can range from tough to seemingly impossible. You’ll need luck, skill, people on the inside and the kind of determination that would make Genghis Khan look like a couch potato. But if you apply yourself and sink your teeth into the task, you can do it. You may have to take less money than you would initially like, and you definitely will  have to make sacrifices, but it’s worth it. Get Busy on Spec Work First and foremost, you need a great portfolio. Don’t believe the movies and TV shows - you cannot worm your way into an ad agency on charm  and a few after-hours drinks at a local bar with the creative director. You need solid, original ideas. Opinions will vary on what is good and bad and what level of finish your ideas should have, but most experienced creative people want to see great ideas, regardless of finish. If it’s truly innovative but you don’t have the skills to get it polished, they’ll still value the ideas because they are the driving force behind good ads. To show off your work, you must have an online portfolio. Lets face it, the days of leather cases are over. Work on Your Portfolio Since were on the subject of portfolios, take the time to perfect it. As mentioned above, most people dont want (or have the time) to look over a hard-cover portfolio. So going online to showcase your work is key to help advance your career and land you that great first job. Building your portfolio isnt really as difficult as it may seem. There are many sites with templates to buy or use for free for any career including creative advertising. You can input images, videos and graphics, and design a portfolio in no time. But if youre really a genius and think you can handle coding and design, why not build your own website? This may be another way to stand out from the crowd and show a creative director that you have what it takes to work at his agency. Stand Out Good advertising agencies are constantly bombarded with applications from eager, creative people looking for jobs. They will flood HR with portfolio sites, resumes, YouTube videos, Facebook posts and everything else now available to job seekers. To stand out, you need to do what all good advertising does - get the attention of the intended audience. In this case, your intended audience is the creative director. Have the courage to be original and youll have the best opportunity to get noticed. As you try to stand out, make sure there is substance behind your ideas and your approach. Gimmicks are shallow and will quickly be seen for what they are, so avoid them. Freelance So, you’ve applied for job after job and you’re still not getting anywhere. Now it’s time to consider temporary employment. Agencies have different budgets, and typically have money for freelancers even if they have a full permanent staff. How they spend that money depends on the accounts that need help, so ask. Do they have big pitches coming up where you could help? Are some teams overloaded and in need of assistance? It never hurts to ask. Just remember, charge the rate you deserve at first. If they’re not biting, and this is a genuine attempt to get into that agency, start looking at reductions. But don’t make this a habit. Work for Free If the agency won’t pay you, and you really are as good as you say you are, do the work for free. Not for months, not even weeks, but ask for an opportunity and show them how you would attack it. Agencies rarely turn down an offer of free help, and you may just wow them enough to get some paid work. It may even lead to a job. Consider your time a valuable investment in your future. Go to Industry Events Finally, get into the habit of mingling. It’s sometimes  called networking or schmoozing, but whatever it’s called, you need to get yourself out there. Look on your local Egotist and you’ll soon see a list of weekly events taking place in your area. You can also try Meetup groups for industry-related events. Join the local Art Directors Club or do a search for advertising lectures near you. Get out to as many of these as you can while you’re looking and make sure you have something memorable to give people when you do connect. Tap Into LinkedIn If you havent already, you should create a LinkedIn profile. This site allows you to make professional connections in your industry, get recommendations, and search for jobs. According to the site, more than 80% of recruiters are now advertising jobs and seeking new talent on LinkedIn. As of November 2018, there were more than 120,000 advertising jobs posted on the site. Now that you know that, here are a few suggestions to make the most of your profile: Keep your profile up-to-date. An old, outdated profile just doesnt cut it. The same goes with a profile that doesnt give any detail. It shows that you just arent committed.Make sure you have a clear, professional photo to add to your profile - so forget that selfie you took when you were out with your friends.Be clear about your skills and your objectives. This will help lead you to the right people, and will also point those searching directly to you.Make sure you highlight all of your relevant experience, including any volunteer or freelance work that youve done. And dont forget, LinkedIn has industry-specific groups you can join to help broaden your networking circle. Not only will this help you tap into the right stream of people, you may gain access to events in your area to lead you to them.
